Abstract : This paper presents an indicative study to evaluate the - urban - function performance requirements of waterfront in the new Arabic cities. It concentrates on the research of the human needs in the field of designing and planning of waterfront on the coastal cities. This work discusses the adaptability between needs and socio-cultural background forces within the understanding of the relationship between requirements and contemporary issues in each country. Hence, this study tries to explore the main characteristics of waterfront in Arab cities. as well as it will be determining requirements performance in these waterfronts to present (or formulate) design and planning criteria that will help to measure the efficiency of performance. The main contribution of this work is searching around the improvement and development of waterfront respecting performance requirements and user satisfaction. This paper comprises two main issues: First: Identification of the meaning of waterfronts; concepts, characteristics, requirements. socio-cultural forces, and design criteria. Second: AI-Fanateer waterfront in AI-jubail industrial city in Saudi Arabia is taken as a case for the work and demonstration. Finally this paper presents some solutions as recommendations and guidelines to develop the quality of spaces and relationships in all waterfronts on the one hand, and particularly AI-Fanateer waterfront on the other hand.
